Dear KIPP Texas Families,
Congratulations on a successful first few days of school! For our KIPP Texas-Houston families, we are extremely fortunate that the Houston area was spared the effects of Hurricane Laura. Let’s all send our love and support to our neighbors in Louisiana and East Texas who are going through some very trying times right now as the storm was incredibly destructive.
We know there were some technology glitches and challenges as our KIPPsters and teachers are adjusting to virtual learning, but there is nothing like seeing our KIPPsters’ bright faces lighting up with learning and being together in community. We absolutely adore your KIPPsters, and we are so grateful to have our virtual classrooms full of their love and cheer. Thank you for your patience and grace as we work through technology issues to make sure all of our KIPPsters have full access to their classrooms and learning every day.
Before I share a school-related update, I want to take a moment to address yet another reason why KIPP Texas is committed to being an anti-racist organization. The police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin shows, yet again, that our country, our society, our communities and each of us have to do better; we have to be better. KIPP Texas stands firm against racism, police brutality and the killing of unarmed Black men, women and children.
As we start the new school year, I want to provide an opportunity for some of our KIPPsters to get an early start for in-person learning. Please note, because KIPP Courage in Houston is part of the SKY Partnership with Spring Branch ISD, we may have a different phase-in strategy for KIPPsters who attend KIPP Courage.
In-Person Learning Phase-In
If it is safe to do so and, as mandated by the Texas Education Agency, each KIPP Texas region will invite a very small group of KIPPsters back for daily Academies. This in-person instruction will take place between September 21 and October 9. These Academies are designed with our three guiding principles in mind: protecting the safety of our Little and Big KIPPsters, creating equitable, joyful, academically excellent learning experiences, and caring for our Team & Family.
Each KIPP Texas region will determine their approach to the Academies, bringing back groups of students who normally need additional support as they transition from one grade to another. We will reach out to families with KIPPsters in these specific cohorts to invite them to attend one of the Academies. We will finalize all plans by the week of September 8. Families with children in these cohorts will be invited to participate in these Academies or can choose to continue 100% virtual learning.
With the start of these Academies on September 21 through October 9, we will continue as planned to phase-in the remaining KIPPsters whose families have requested in-person learning starting October 13, with a plan to be fully phased-in by October 19. Families who want virtual instruction for their KIPPsters will continue virtually, as planned. Families will be able to change their method of learning (virtual or in-person) for every grading cycle until virtual instruction is no longer necessary because it is safe to fully resume all in-person operations.
We continue to consider feedback from our KIPPsters and families, school leadership, and Team & Family in making each decision. We will keep you updated weekly as we have made decisions.
Thank you for trusting us with your KIPPster. We feel so grateful to partner with you!
