As George Floyd was laid to rest yesterday in his hometown of Houston, our own Little KIPPster continues his road to recovery after being shot in the head by an Austin police officer while peacefully protesting. Our thoughts and prayers are with the KIPP Brave High School student and his family.
We are outraged by this senseless act against our student. This and many other incidents and hate crimes across the nation painfully continue to remind us that there is much work to be done, and there is not equity.
Racism and hatred of any kind can never be tolerated. When our community is hurting, we all are impacted.
Let us be clear. As we move forward, we will not work with an entity where conduct of the nature displayed by the Austin Police Department (APD) is tolerated. We will continue to demand accountability and justice from APD and the City of Austin in the name of our children and our communities. Several members of our staff testified in front of the Austin City Council last week as private citizens to seek justice and change, and I’m incredibly proud of how they showed up on behalf of themselves and our communities. We are not done. We are just beginning.
