KIPP Texas-Austin No School Return Date and Family COVID-19 Support Program

April 1, 2020

Dear KIPP Texas-Austin Families,

You probably heard that Gov. Greg Abbott ordered schools in Texas to remain closed until Monday, May 4 in the continuing effort to stem the spread of the coronavirus. We know it has been disappointing to continue to push back the return date to our school buildings. We want to be back in our buildings and return to our normal schedules as soon as we can; however, as you know, the COVID-19 situation is fluid and ever changing.

No School Return Date

Rather than trying to pin down a specific return date that may change, we wanted you to know that our school buildings and offices will be closed until it is safe for everyone to return. We look forward to giving you a firm date when local and state health officials inform us that we can safely return. We will give our families as much notice as possible of this transition back into our school buildings and offices so that you can prepare to return. In the meantime, learning and food service will not stop at KIPP Texas.  We will continue our daily (Monday – Friday) food service and distance learning until we return to our school buildings and a regular schedule.

The coronavirus outbreak has shown the true strength of the KIPP Texas family! From ensuring our Little KIPPsters have technology for distance learning to healthy meals for them and their siblings, our mission statement couldn’t be lived out more, “Together with our families and communities….”

KIPP Texas COVID-19 Support Program

KIPP Texas is just as committed to its Little KIPPsters’ families who may be suffering financial hardship as a result of the coronavirus outbreak through our newly launched COVID-19 Support Program. Whether it’s the loss of income, medical issues, or other difficulty, WE ARE HERE TO HELP. Please complete this needs assessment survey and share details about how we may assist – whether financial, emotional or otherwise. NOTE: Be assured this information will remain confidential.

Grab & Go Meal Updates

We are excited to announce starting Monday, April 6, students will receive a snack in addition to breakfast and lunch at our food distribution sites.

Campus: South Campus-5107 I-35, Austin, TX 78744

Distribution Times: 10am -1pm

Meals Provided: Breakfast, Lunch and Snack

We also want to make you aware of recent changes to the meal pick-up procedures. Parents/guardians of children under the age of 19 now may pick up meals for their children without their child(ren) present. Parents without children present must provide one of the following documents to pick up meals. You may display your document from your vehicle’s window or have it on your vehicle’s dash.  This new requirement is to check for eligibility as well as for required record keeping. Documentation may include:

  • A school ID for your child(ren)
  • An individual student report card
  • An official email or letter from your school listing your children who are enrolled in school
  • Attendance record or other official school document showing the name of your child(ren)
  • A student pick-up placard displaying the name of your child(ren)
  • A birth certificate

Without a piece of documentation, parents will receive meals only for the number of children present with them. This change is due to an eased requirement from the U.S. and Texas Department of Agriculture.

KIPP Texas is honored to be able to serve free meals to our families and the communities in which we serve. To date, we have served over 32,000 meals. We appreciate your patience while these new requirements are being implemented.

By helping each other, we ultimately will rise together as one KIPP Texas family.  For more about the KIPP Texas response to the coronavirus outbreak,  and information from the state on how to protect your family from COVID-19, please go to our website and click on the coronavirus link.

With gratitude,

Justin Scott
