Dear KIPP Texas-Houston Families,
As a Team and Family, we have navigated unprecedented changes in our lives over the last few weeks. I have never been more proud of our KIPPsters as they have worked so hard to navigate new technology, connect with their teachers in a new way, and support each other. We know we have asked a lot of you, too, as you have helped our KIPPsters with this new way of learning. I am happy to report that our KIPPsters are doing remarkable job making progress with their learning.
I am writing today to share an update on our school buildings and how we will manage the remainder of the school year.
The safety of our students and staff has always been our priority. After consulting with local and state leaders and health officials, we have made the difficult decision that we will NOT return to our school buildings for the remainder of this school year. Instead, we will continue distance learning with our KIPPsters and work remotely through June 4, the last day of the school year. Likewise, we will continue to provide meal service to our families and communities. We realize that this decision may bring a range of emotions including grief and sadness. You will likely have many questions as a result. I would like to try and do my best to answer some of those here.
Is SCHOOL ending or are just the buildings remaining closed?
The school buildings will remain closed. Distance learning and the Grab & Go food distribution will continue through the end of the school year. Our mission has not changed, and learning for our KIPPsters must continue through June 4, the last day of the school year. Our KIPPsters are depending on us to provide them an excellent education from home.
What does this mean for plans over the summer or the start of the next school year?
There are many layers to making this decision, and we realize the importance of sharing information with you as soon as possible. At this point, we anticipate having more updates in late April.
What does this mean for end of the year trips, graduations, award ceremonies, and other events and celebrations?
We know how hard our KIPPsters work for these events and how much they look forward to these time-honored milestones. Unfortunately, we will have to cancel award ceremonies and end of year trips for the safety of all. We are working now to provide refunds for all end of the year trips and will have more information on that process for schools very soon. We are still reviewing options for graduation. We are working to postpone the ceremonies and create ways to honor the Class of 2020 virtually in the meantime. We are working on engaging our KIPPsters, families, and staff to speak into new plans. Please share ideas with your school leader.
We will continue to provide updates as they are available. Thank you for your support! Please reach out to your school leader with any questions.
