KIPP Texas-Houston Needs Assessment, Bus Delivery for Meals

Dear KIPP Texas-Houston Families,

You probably heard that Gov. Greg Abbott ordered schools in Texas to remain closed until Monday, May 4 in the continuing effort to stem the spread of the coronavirus. We know it has been disappointing to continue to push back the return date to our school buildings. We want to be back in our buildings and return to our normal schedules as soon as we can; however, as you know, the COVID-19 situation is fluid and ever changing.

No School Return Date

Rather than trying to pin down a specific return date that may change, we wanted you to know that our school buildings and offices will be closed until it is safe for everyone to return. We look forward to giving you a firm date when local and state health officials inform us that we can safely return. We will give our families as much notice as possible of this transition back into our school buildings and offices so that you can prepare to return. In the meantime, learning and food service will not stop at KIPP Texas.

The coronavirus pandemic has shown the true strength of the KIPP Texas Team & Family! From ensuring our Little KIPPsters have technology for distance learning to healthy meals for them and their siblings, our mission statement couldn’t be lived out more, “Together with our families and communities….”

KIPP Texas Family COVID-19 Support Program

KIPP Texas is just as committed to its Little KIPPsters’ families who may be suffering financial hardship as a result of the coronavirus outbreak through our newly launched KIPP Texas Family COVID-19 Support Program. Whether it’s the loss of income, medical issues, or other difficulty, WE ARE HERE TO HELP. Please complete this needs assessment survey and share details about how we may assist – whether financial, emotional or otherwise. NOTE: Be assured this information will remain confidential.

Grab & Go Meals Update

While many of you have been able to take advantage of our Grab & Go meals, we realize transportation to our distribution sites has proven challenging for some of our families, especially for our bus riders. KIPP Texas wants to ensure students have nutritional food to eat, therefore we are excited to announce in addition to our current food distribution sites, starting tomorrow, Thursday, April 2, we will be distributing breakfast and lunch “on the go” for families on the northside of Houston.

Four buses will be driving through neighborhoods and distributing food at specific stops.  See the bus delivery grab & go route schedule below. We ask families to arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled arrival time. Please keep in mind, buses may be delayed depending on the number of families served at each stop.

It is important that families continue to practice social distancing when lining up to receive meals.  Please ensure six feet between people so that we can safely provide this service to anyone who is under the age of 19.

Remember, parents can now pick up meals for their children without their child(ren) present, but must have identification of that child. This is a state requirement.  Documentation may include:

  • A school ID for your child
  • An individual report card
  • An official email or letter from your school listing your children who are enrolled in a school
  • Attendance record or any other official school document showing the name of your child
  • A student pick-up placard which has the name of your child

If you don’t have the identification, meals will be provided to those children present.  This new process includes the three distribution sites.

And beginning Monday, April 6, students will receive dinner, in addition to breakfast and lunch at all distribution sites.
