KIPP Texas Public Schools has resumed spring sports with strict safety protocols in place for players, coaches, and families. Now students are able to participate in baseball, softball, track, and cheer.
Participating in athletics can foster profound and positive social and emotional health outcomes in our community. Socializing with friends and coaches, and returning to a more structured routine, can boost a child’s mental health. In addition, sports can provide a template for students to learn concepts of teamwork, leadership, work ethic, and integrity.
In January, KIPP Texas began COVID testing all student-athletes twice a week. The COVID testing is free, optional, and subject to permission from parents. In order to participate in sports, students must consent to tests during practice. KIPP Texas has performed over 1,800 COVID tests for its athletes and coaching staff since implementing these safety measures.
The health and safety of our athletes, staff, the teams they compete against, and our entire KIPP community, remains a top priority. We are excited to resume sports this season and the opportunity to provide some sense of normalcy during these uncertain times.
