Dear KIPP Texas Families,
As we close out the week, I want to communicate our plans for the week of November 30, when we return from the Thanksgiving break. KIPP Texas remains committed to providing a joyful, academically excellent, and equitable learning environment for all KIPPsters and prioritizing the safety of our Little and Big KIPPsters. Out of care for the health and safety of our community and based on predictive data that COVID cases may rise after the Thanksgiving holiday, all KIPP Texas schools will delay and phase-in the start of in-person school after the Thanksgiving break until Wednesday, December 2. Instruction and learning will take place virtually on Monday, November 30 and Tuesday, December 1 at all KIPP Texas schools. In-person learning will begin with specific grade levels on Wednesday, December 2. KIPPsters whose families have selected the virtual learning model for this instructional period will continue learning virtually.
Like you, we have seen the steady increase of COVID cases in Texas; this option to delay and phase-in the start of in-person school after the holiday will allow us to have 48 hours to determine the state of cases amongst Little and Big KIPPsters, exposures, and assess safety concerns before bringing students and staff back on Wednesday in smaller numbers. This decision is aligned with our beliefs and principles – it promotes the safety of our Little and Big KIPPsters, takes into consideration our families’ need for in-person instruction, and reinforces our belief that our KIPPsters learn best in-person.
Below you’ll find the details for the week of November 30.
Week of November 30
Your school will communicate the process and schedules for virtual classes on Monday, November 30 and Tuesday, December 1, as well as the phased-in process for in-person instruction.
Starting Wednesday, December 2, grade levels will begin a phased-in process for in-person instruction as follows:
Wednesday, December 2: Grades PreK 3, PreK 4, K, 1, 5, 8, 9, and 10*
Thursday, December 3: Grades 3, 4, 7, and 11
Friday, December 4: Grades 2, 6, and 12
*KIPP Mosaic Academy and KIPP Paseo Prep – grades 5 and 6 will return in person on Wednesday, December 2.
Please note that the phase-in process could be affected by Little and Big KIPPsters’ needs at a specific school; schools will share any changes to this phase-in process if needed.
If your KIPPster is currently attending school in-person, you will receive the Wellness Survey, via email and text, on Tuesday, December 1. Please respond to that survey on Tuesday. This will allow us to have an idea of the impact, if any, of COVID cases in preparation for Wednesday’s phased-in process.
If, at any time during the break, your KIPPster exhibits COVID-19 symptoms or tests positive for COVID-19, please reach out to your school immediately and do not send them to school on Wednesday.
If you are in possession of a KIPP Texas WiFi hotspot that is no longer working and need internet access, please submit a KTX Information Technology ticket by visiting this website (click on on the top right hand corner of the page). Upon receipt, we will contact you to coordinate picking up a replacement at a particular campus in your KIPP Texas region. WiFi hotspot swaps/replacement will take place on Friday, November 20th and on Monday, November 30th through appointment.
All school practices and games will be cancelled for Monday (11/30) and Tuesday (12/1) and will resume alongside the phase-in process. If a school has a prolonged phase-in process, athletics would follow the same schedule.
Grab & Go Meals
Grab & Go meals will continue to be distributed from 9 am to 1 pm on Monday (11/30) and Tuesday (12/1) all at KIPP Texas campuses for all KIPP students, both in-person and virtual. They will include breakfast, lunch, and supper. Afternoon and evening distribution will continue at select locations. To see the times and locations, visit visit our website..
All buses will resume normal operation on Wednesday, December 2.
You will receive a communication from your school providing contact information and many school-specific details later today.
As we finish the week and head off to a much-needed break, I want to encourage you to consider the following: enjoy the time off with your KIPPsters; please enjoy the time off responsibly – our collective safety will depend on decisions we make individually over the next week, so let’s remember to wear masks, socially distance, and travel safely. Please do not use these two virtual school days as an extension of the Thanksgiving break. We need to use these days to allow potential exposures to show themselves so we can mitigate the spread of COVID in our schools.
I am so thankful for each and every one of our KIPPsters. The KIPP Texas Team & Family looks forward to welcoming our KIPPsters to our virtual classrooms on Monday and Tuesday after the break!
