School Reopening Update after Winter Storm Uri

February 19, 2021

Dear KIPP Texas Families,

What a difficult week! I hope this message finds you safe and on your way to recovery. After all we have been through, I’ve certainly grown to further appreciate the blessings of the basics we often take for granted – electricity, water, warmth during the winter months, and connectivity. I am relieved that many of you have communicated that power and/or water have been restored. For those who still don’t have power or water, please let us know how we can help you by filling out this needs assessment survey. After an initial collection of responses, we will reach out to those in need with next steps, starting next week.

If you are in immediate need of food or water, please click the link for your city below for information about distributions happening this weekend:

I have two important updates for you today: our school reopening plan and an adjustment to our enrollment timelines

School Reopening | Phased Approach

In an effort to give time and space for recovery for our Little and Big KIPPsters, we will have a phased approach to reopening next week. As we continue to monitor the inclement weather and after effects of Storm Uri across our regions, we are focused on the health and safety of each member of our Team and Family.

The chart below provides a summary of reopening our plan:

Day of the WeekKIPP Texas Public Schools (all regions)
Monday - February 22Closed | Students will not participate in virtual or in-person learning.
Tuesday - February 23Asynchronous learning for 100% of KIPPsters, which means teachers may assign students self-guided activities.
Wednesday - February 24Synchronous, virtual learning for 100% of KIPPsters which means teachers will bring classes together for virtual learning experiences.
Thursday* - February 25In-person* and/or virtual learning.
Friday* - February 26In-person* and/or virtual learning.
*Our ability to operate in-person will be dependent on our facilities’ readiness. We will inform you if plans change for Thursday and Friday by Wednesday at 4:30 PM.

*Our ability to operate in-person will be dependent on our facilities’ readiness. We will inform you if plans change for Thursday and Friday by Wednesday at 4:30 PM.

Please note: Schools and teachers will be reaching out to connect with families and students to assess students’ well-being and provide additional details for asynchronous and virtual learning.

COVID Protocols

As we prepare to return to in-person instruction for those families who have chosen that method of learning, we ask that you continue to follow and maintain our COVID-19 protocols. If any KIPPster tested positive for COVID-19, came in contact with a COVID-positive friend or family member in the past week, or is sick or showing any COVID-19 symptoms listed in the Daily Health Self Assessment Checklist they should not come to school in person until cleared by a member of the KIPP Texas COVID Response Team.

Every family will receive a Wellness survey on Monday, February 22. Please complete it as if your KIPPster were going to school so we can have the necessary information to plan for in-person school on Thursday. You will also receive a Wellness survey on Wednesday, February, 24. Please complete it before sending your KIPPster to school on Thursday.

If your KIPPster will return to in-person learning, please take a moment to review the following information as a reminder of our in-person health and safety protocols:

Timeline Adjustment for Re-enrollment

Our annual re-enrollment process originally had a deadline of today, February 19, but due to the aftermath of Storm Uri, we have extended the deadline to March 5, 2021. We love having your KIPPster with us and hope to have them back for the 2021-2022 school year. Please look for an email from SchoolMint if you have not completed your re-enrollment.

Timeline Adjustment for New to KIPP (NTK) Enrollment

Our application process for new to KIPP families originally had a deadline of today, February 19, with the lottery running on March 1, but due to the aftermath of Storm Uri, we will be extending the enrollment deadline to March 5, 2021 and run the lottery on March 22, 2021. Please consider sharing this link to the KIPP Texas enrollment page on your social media profiles with family and friends who are looking for an amazing, high-quality, public education for their children.

If you would like, to connect your friends and family with someone to learn more about KIPP, you can find contact information for our student recruitment managers at: https://kipptexas.org/enroll/#Registration. Thank you for continuing to tell your friends and family about KIPP Texas!

While the worst of the storm may have passed, there is still a long road ahead before we can all get back to a sense of normalcy. Many Texans throughout the state, including in our Team and Family, are still dealing with the aftermath of winter storm Uri. Please know that our thoughts are with you, and we will continue to find ways to help.

Please reach out to your school if you have any questions,

With gratitude,
