KIPP Austin Brave High School recently celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a vibrant, ongoing screen printing workshop, immersing students in a hands-on creative journey. In collaboration with the Mexic-Arte Museum, this initiative is more than just an art class; it’s a profound exploration of identity and culture.

The Screen It! Program aims to introduce students to the fundamentals of screen printing and potential careers in the arts. This initiative emphasizes creative expression and cultural celebration while teaching essential skills.Students in grades 10 to 12 began the screen printing process by drafting stencil designs that reflect their individuality and cultural backgrounds.
Under the expert guidance of featured artist Andrea Montilva Pilonieta, they cut out their designs and prepared for printing. The following steps involved placing the stencil on a t-shirt or reusable bag, applying screen print paint, and using a smoothing device to spread the paint evenly across the stencil. Finally, they let their creations dry, transforming their imaginative designs into tangible art pieces. This journey is one of connection to their heritage and a profound exploration of artistry.

“Our art classes are about more than just creation. We encourage our students to discover their identity and their voice in society. They can then create art and images that reflect and celebrate their cultures, ideas, beliefs, and values. Art helps students face fears and prepares them for the challenges of the real world.”
Cassandre Connolly, the master teacher, KIPP Austin Brave

About 100 enthusiastic KIPP Austin Brave students are participating in the workshop. This initiative is a fantastic way for students to engage with their heritage, develop their skills, and express themselves artistically while making lasting memories. The workshop occurs on-site during art classes and will continue until November 13. As we reflect on Hispanic Heritage Month, KIPP Austin Brave’s commitment to fostering creativity and cultural pride shines bright through its students’ artistic endeavors!
