Five Things to Know About KIPP Texas

On Friday, October 8, we are opening our student application for the 2022-23 school year, and we are so excited and humbled that you are considering KIPP Texas for your child’s education. We know choosing the right school includes many considerations, and we’re here to help!

Here are five things that set KIPP Texas apart from other schools!

1. Academic Excellence

Students at KIPP Texas are never lost in a crowd. Every student is a valued member of our Team & Family, and we structure our days to maximize small group instruction and individualized support. “This is a place where kids don’t get overlooked,” says Dominique Hayward, Special Education Coordinator at KIPP Houston High School. But let’s be clear: For us, Academic Excellence does not mean simply catering to standardized testing. Our job is to teach students not what to think but how to think, and we take that seriously. Whether students are working on reading their first word or solving their first calculus problem, we challenge their minds, weave academic rigor with real-world issues, and always nurture a joy of learning.

And what we do gets results. KIPP students complete college at a rate comparable to the national average for all students and four times higher for students from low-income households.

2. KIPP Forward

Our students set a high bar for their futures. For some, that means being the first in their family to graduate from college or buy a home. For others, it means serving our country or creating a business.

Each high school has a college counselor and a career counselor because KIPP Texas ensures our KIPPsters leave us “ready for life”—a step beyond “ready for college.” We want each student to have the skills and confidence to pursue any path that leads to their highest aspirations. Our KIPP Forward team partners with students to create a plan that fits their individual goals and a sense of purpose and partners with KIPPsters long after high school graduation.

3. Brave and Belonging Spaces

Every student walks the doors or school bearing gifts. Talent. Perspective. Drive. Inspiration. And every student deserves a chance to develop those gifts into the skills and confidence they need to thrive. Our community is built on love, compassion, and inclusivity. Knowledge is power, and every student deserves a path to a fulfilling life.

4. Extracurricular Activities

Did you know that more than 8,000 of our KIPPsters played sports during the 2020-21 school year? We believe that for students to thrive, they need a well-rounded education. We understand the value of athletics and teamwork. We believe in the power of the arts.

Our schools offer a range of programs: successful football, volleyball, soccer, and cheerleading teams; classes in theatre, dance, and visual art; and clubs for chess, debate, and robotics.

5. Transportation and Child Nutrition

Attendance matters and we make it easy for our students to get to school. We offer FREE bus transportation for our students. And every student receives a FREE nutritious breakfast and lunch, because, at KIPP Texas, we know that it’s impossible to learn when your stomach is rumbling.

We will accept student applications beginning Friday, October 8, 2021, and will conduct our student lottery on Monday, February 28, 2022. If you have any questions or are ready to apply, please visit https://kipptexas.org/enroll. We would love to welcome you into our KIPP community.
