KIPP Texas shares testimony with lawmakers about how power and water outages impacted vulnerable students and families

KIPP Texas CEO Sehba Ali submitted written comments to Texas legislators holding hearings with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and other energy officials about the power  failures during Winter Storm Uri that left millions of Texans in the cold and dark and without water for days.

A needs assessment survey sent to staff and families last week received over 1,000 responses within 36 hours.  90% of respondents requested food assistance due to homes being without power for several days.  As of today, nearly 3,000 families have responded, with more needs being discovered every hour as school-based teams conduct outreach efforts to check on all students and their families.

The Texas House and Senate are meeting with officials and executives to discuss what went wrong with the state’s power infrastructure during last week’s winter storm. The public did not have an opportunity to speak to lawmakers during the proceedings; only invited in-person testimony was allowed. However, the public was allowed to submit written comments to the House and Senate electronically.
