On Saturday, May 21, KIPP Oak Cliff Academy students got a unique opportunity to sit down with NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace. Through Wallace’s “Live to Be Different” foundation (L2BD), he is partnering with KIPP to share his journey to racing and finding his voice as an advocate for racial justice and diversity in the sport.
The day before he competed in the NASCAR All-Star Race, Wallace shared his story with KIPP Oak Cliff Academy students at the Texas Motor Speedway, a day that also included a track tour and opportunities to watch the race.
“I’m honored to experience this once-in-a-lifetime event and have a chance to meet someone who has had a big impact on this culture,” says Andrew Delgado, 11th grader from KIPP Oak Cliff Academy. He’s just made things better in the racing life.
“To have someone of his caliber speak with our kids makes him relatable,” says Wauneta Vann, School Leader at KIPP Oak Cliff Academy. “Anything is possible. And his conversation about self-doubt and overcoming it all is huge for our kids.”
“It’s an accomplishment to black people nationwide to see someone like him advocate for people who look like me,” says Johnny Lang Jr., KIPP Oak Cliff Academy student. 
Wallace is only the second African-American race car driver in NASCAR history and the only current driver. For many students who attended, this was their first time learning about Wallace and seeing a NASCAR race up close and personal.
