Participating in school sports has many long-lasting benefits for students. In addition to athletes learning to become leaders, playing sports creates an environment that challenges students and helps them develop lifelong habits that go beyond high school. Students who participate in athletics often build positive relationships with their teammates and develop a better understanding of themselves. Sports are also a way our KIPPsters learn to persist and rise above challenges.
At KIPP Texas Public Schools, 100% of our middle and high schools offer a robust variety of athletics programs and have dedicated coaches. Our teams are committed to excellence and setting the bar high for all stakeholders involved.

We asked Jordan Carrethers, Athletic Director at KIPP East End to help explain the benefits of playing sports.
Can you explain the importance of sports in education?
The importance of sports in education cannot be understated. Sports lie at the intersection of joy and investment in the school community. Sports connects teachers to students, students to teachers, and the entire school community in a meaningful way. Sports in education also is a vehicle to a positive and productive future in students across the world. For example, student-athletes can earn full scholarships by being exceptional in a sport and it can change them and their families’ lives forever. Sports is the passport to equitable and meaningful opportunities for students to live choice-filled lives. Lastly, sports also teaches resilience in the face of adversity. To be successful in school, students must learn to face adversity, show resilience and overcome challenges. Sports teaches that lesson of grit and determination.
Can you share information about some of the sports offered at your school and some of the successes you’ve had recently?
At KIPP East End High School we offer football, girls & boys volleyball, girls & boys basketball, girls & boys soccer, softball, baseball, & track & field. In our first three years in existence as a high school we already have 3 regional championships (girls soccer, boys soccer, & softball). We also have 2nd place regional finishes in the past couple of years in baseball and two trophies from our cheer team at UCA competitions. Our cheer team also qualified for Nationals this year in Florida!
