KIPP Texas Public Schools is committed to the power of education to shape futures and honor the past. As we celebrate Native American Heritage Month this November, we recognize and reflect on the rich cultural heritage of the Indigenous peoples who have shaped the land we call home. This month, we honor their history, celebrate their resilience, and reaffirm our commitment to creating an inclusive, empowering environment for all KIPPsters.
Our KIPP Somos campus in San Antonio, Texas, stands proudly on the ancestral lands of the Coahuiltecan and Payaya peoples, who have called this region home for centuries. These Indigenous communities were integral to the area’s rich cultural and historical heritage, and we are honored to recognize their legacy.
The Coahuiltecan and Payaya peoples are part of the broader Indigenous nations that have contributed to the shaping of Texas. The Payaya, in particular, were the original inhabitants of the San Antonio area and lived in close connection with the land and natural resources. Their deep understanding of the environment, cultural traditions, and sense of community have left a mark on the history of this region.
KIPP Texas acknowledges the significance of these ancestral lands and aim to foster an environment where every KIPPster feels connected to the legacy of those who came before us. We believe honoring Native American history is essential to building an inclusive culture that values diversity and promotes a deep respect for all backgrounds.
Native American Heritage Month is an opportunity to reflect on how we can further support Indigenous communities and ensure their voices are heard in every space, especially within education. At KIPP Texas, we strive to create opportunities for all KIPPsters to learn about and honor the diverse cultural histories that form the foundation of our society.
This month, we invite our Team and Family to join us in celebrating Native American Heritage Month by learning more about the contributions of Indigenous peoples to our shared history, engaging in conversations about cultural understanding, and continuing our collective journey toward greater equity.
