Dual Language Immersion
In our One-Way Dual Language Immersion program, Spanish-speaking students acquire proficiency in two program languages, Spanish and English. A one-way program consists of scholars who are fluent in the partner language (Spanish) and qualify for language services.
The KIPP Texas Dual Language program is intentionally designed to reflect our commitment to biliteracy, biculturalism, and academic excellence. When you walk into one of our classrooms, you will see a vibrant, “language-rich” space where every element supports a student’s journey to becoming bilingual.
Key Features of Our Classrooms:
- Collaborative Workspaces: Because language is best acquired through use, our classrooms are arranged to encourage student talk. You will see students working in pairs or small groups, engaging in “cooperative learning” to practice their speaking and listening skills in real-time.
- The Bridge: A signature element of the Dual Language model is the “Bridge.” This is a dedicated space where students transfer concepts learned in one language to the other. You will see side-by-side charts—one in Spanish and one in English—helping students identify cognates and understand the linguistic connections between the two languages.
- Authentic Bilingual Library: Our classrooms feature diverse libraries filled with high-quality literature in both Spanish and English. These books don’t just teach language; they celebrate the various cultures represented within our community.
Our Dual Language Journey
Many parents ask: “If my child learns in Spanish, will they fall behind in English?” The answer is no! Research shows that a strong foundation in a first language is the fastest way to learn a second. In our Dual Language classrooms, we start with 80% Spanish in Pre-K to build a “literacy engine.” As your child grows, we gradually add more English each year. By 3rd grade, they are academic stars in both languages!
