KIPP Texas is thrilled to announce that two of our exceptional teachers have been recognized with the prestigious 2024 Harriett Ball Excellence in Teaching Award. This national honor, awarded to only 10 KIPP educators across the country, celebrates outstanding teaching, leadership, and commitment to student success. Each winner receives a $10,000 prize in recognition of their exemplary work in the classroom.
Meet the Honorees
Isaiah Allen has been making a significant impact at KIPP Sharpstown College Prep for the past four years. His dedication to his students is evident in their achievements—89% of his students reached the “Meets+” level on the Algebra end-of-course exam in 2022. Beyond academics, Allen is deeply committed to the holistic development of his students, founding the school’s weightlifting club and leading after-school restorative justice activities.
Allen’s innovative approach to teaching, particularly his use of blended learning technology, has made his classroom a model of excellence. He’s recognized as a content expert within his department, known for creating an inclusive environment where every student feels valued. His commitment extends beyond the school day, as he regularly volunteers for summer school and weekend tutoring sessions, ensuring that all students have the support they need to succeed.
“When I’m in the classroom, I don’t think of that as work — I’m having fun,” said Allen. “I know some of my students will be doctors, lawyers, or very influential people in politics. My hope for them is that they treat the people they are caring for with the same patience and humility that they’ve seen in my classroom.”
Brittany Buchanan, who teaches AP Human Geography at KIPP University Prep, is another outstanding educator recognized with this award. Despite the challenges of teaching students with low incoming proficiency rates, Buchanan has consistently raised the bar, increasing the percentage of students earning college credit on AP exams. Her innovative teaching methods, which blend differentiated instruction, cognitive science-based study skills, and socio-emotional support, have created a learning environment where every student feels capable of success.
Buchanan’s influence extends beyond her classroom. She serves as a grade-level chair, student government teacher, and advisor for the Gay Straight Alliance Club, contributing significantly to the school’s culture. Additionally, she mentors colleagues and leads professional development sessions, sharing her expertise and passion for education.
“Relationship-building has always been my number one, and then content after that,” said Buchanan. “Students know that I’m showing up as myself and that it’s a safe place for them to be themselves. The barriers they’ve built up start breaking down, and that’s when I see them take off with the content.”
The Harriett Ball Excellence in Teaching Award honors the legacy of Harriett Ball, a visionary educator who spent 35 years teaching in Houston and Austin public schools. Ball was known for her innovative methods that engaged students through chants, songs, and movement, transforming classrooms into lively spaces for learning. Her influence continues to inspire educators across the country, including those at KIPP, where her mentorship helped shape the foundation of the first KIPP school in 1994.
We are incredibly proud of Isaiah Allen and Brittany Buchanan for their dedication to our KIPPsters. Their passion for teaching and their impact on our community is truly inspiring. Congratulations to both of these exceptional educators on this well-deserved recognition!
