The 2025-2026 school year is in full swing, and as we approach the season that shines a light on safe travel awareness, KIPP Texas Public Schools is leading the effort to protect our students and reinforce critical driving laws.
National School Bus Safety Week, held annually during the third week in October, will be observed from Monday, October 20, through Friday, October 24, 2025. This is a vital reminder that safety is a shared responsibility across our community.
Our Unwavering Commitment
The KIPP Texas Public Schools Student Transportation Department is dedicated to providing free, safe, and reliable transportation, ensuring our students have consistent access to the high-quality education they deserve. Our exceptional team of drivers and transportation staff are essential members of the KIPP Texas Team & Family. Their daily commitment sees them drive KIPPsters over 1.5 million miles annually.
Please Obey School Bus Traffic Laws
We call on all community members, especially our families and KIPPsters, to fully understand and strictly obey school bus traffic laws. Your attention protects the lives of children.
When Driving Near a School Bus, You Must Know the Signals:
- Yellow Flashing Lights: This is your warning. The bus is slowing down to stop and is about to load or unload children. Slow down immediately and prepare to stop.
- Red Flashing Lights & Extended Stop Arm: The bus is stopped. You must stop completely. Remain stopped until the lights are off and the arm is fully withdrawn. Passing a bus in this situation is illegal in all 50 states.
- The Danger Zone: This is the area 10 feet around the bus where children are most vulnerable. Stop at least 10 feet from the bus—front and back—to give students safe space to enter and exit.
- Undivided Roads: If you are driving on a road without a median or physical barrier separating the lanes, you are legally required to stop your vehicle when the red lights are flashing, even if you are traveling in the opposite direction.
Safety Tip: If you see a student drop an item near the bus, they are taught not to pick it up! They should leave it and tell the driver immediately. That small delay prevents them from unexpectedly darting back into the bus’s Danger Zone. Safety first, homework second!
