Frequently Asked Questions
My child speaks Spanish at home. Which program should they be in?
Depending on your campus, your child will likely be enrolled in either the Dual Language (DL) or Transitional Bilingual Early Exit (TBEE) program. Both models use Spanish as a foundation for learning. The LPAC committee will help determine the best fit based on your child’s grade level and the programs available at your specific school.
How do I know if my child is making progress in English?
Every spring, all Emergent Bilingual students take the TELPAS (Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System). This test measures growth in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Your school’s Multilingual Specialist (MLS) will share these results with you annually to show your child’s progress toward “Advanced High” proficiency.
Can my child participate in these programs if they have an IEP or receive Special Education services?
Yes. We believe all students deserve access to multilingual education. Our Multilingual Specialists work closely with the Special Education department to ensure that the goals in a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) are supported within their language program.
What happens if we move to a different school?
Because uses a unified identification system, your child’s records will follow them. If they were in a Bilingual program, the new school’s LPAC will review those records to ensure they continue receiving the correct services without interruption.
How can I help my child at home if I don’t speak English fluently?
The best way to help is to continue reading and speaking to your child in your strongest language! Research shows that a strong foundation in a first language makes it much easier to learn a second language. Skills like “finding the main idea” or “solving a word problem” transfer from Spanish to English easily.
In what language will my child take the STAAR test?
The LPAC makes this decision per subject (Reading, Math, and Science) based on the student’s language and academic strengths.
- In Dual Language: 3rd-grade students typically take the Spanish STAAR.They may transition to English in 4th or 5th grade as their academic English matures.
- In Early Exit: While curriculum shifts toward English, students may still take the Spanish version if it’s the language they can best show their knowledge in.
- English as a Second Language: Student will take the STAAR in English, content and language supports are available for students who still require additional English support.
Will my child still be able to go to college if they are in an ESL or Bilingual program?
Yes—and they may have an advantage! Colleges highly value students who are biliterate. Our programs ensure they meet all graduation requirements while gaining the extra skill of a second language.
