KIPP Texas is proud to announce that two exceptional KIPP Texas teachers are recognized nationally for their outstanding contributions to student learning. Nnenna Kpando, High School Biology Teacher at KIPP Academy West, and Chasitee Letts, Reading Teacher at KIPP CONNECT Primary, have each received the prestigious 2025 Harriett Ball Excellence in Teaching Award, which comes with a $10,000 award.
Selected from nearly 8,000 teachers across the national KIPP Public Schools network, this annual award highlights educators who exemplify instructional excellence, leadership, and an unwavering belief in student potential. The announcement was made as part of National Teacher Appreciation Week celebrations, making the honor even more special.
“At KIPP Texas, we believe that excellent teaching transforms lives,” said Frank Cush, Regional Superintendent of KIPP Texas-Houston. “Nnenna and Chasitee inspire their students, colleagues, and communities. Their work changes futures, and we are incredibly proud to celebrate their impact.”
Nnenna Kpando: Leading in Science and Student Support

At KIPP Academy West, Ms. Kpando’s biology classroom is a hub of academic success. With 92% of students meeting grade-level expectations and 99% approaching proficiency on state assessments, her data speaks volumes. But beyond scores, her students thrive in a space built on curiosity, affirmation, and emotional safety, earning her 100% favorable student survey results for classroom support.
As a former department chair and current instructional coach, Ms. Kpando integrates hands-on lab work with culturally responsive teaching, helping students envision themselves as future scientists and leaders.
“Nnenna creates a classroom where students see science as a pathway to power,” said Brittany Ford, School Leader at KIPP Academy West. “She fosters confidence, deep thinking, and a true sense of belonging.”
Chasitee Letts: Raising the Bar in Literacy and Inclusion

Ms. Letts has led fifth-grade reading outcomes across KIPP Texas for the past three years. At KIPP CONNECT Primary, her students consistently outperform statewide and local averages. In the 2023–24 school year alone, 94% of her students approached grade-level standards, 62% met them, and 31% achieved mastery on the STAAR reading exam.
More than just test scores, Ms. Letts’ classroom is known for its joyful, inclusive, and structured learning environment. She leads her department with intention—coaching peers, supporting English learners and students with IEPs, and designing instruction that works for every child.
“Chasitee’s classroom is what happens when great teaching meets great love,” said Adam Kutac, School Leader at KIPP CONNECT Primary. “She designs learning experiences that change lives and empower all students to grow and lead.”
The Harriett Ball Excellence in Teaching Award honors the legacy of Harriett Ball, a visionary educator and mentor teacher. A 35-year teaching veteran of Houston and Austin public schools, Ball incorporated chants, songs, and movement to get her students engaged and learning in the classroom. In late 1992, Ball began mentoring Teach for America corps member Dave Levin in Houston. Inspired by her methods, Levin co-founded KIPP in 1994.
Congratulations to our Big KIPPsters for this outstanding achievement. We are so grateful to our educators who work daily to help our Little KIPPsters learn and grow.
